Heat pumps

Below are some short sharp answers that are designed to give you a bit more knowledge in a language you can understand. For more in-depth knowledge take a look at the articles in our blog

Heat pump questions

What is an air source heat pump?

Think of a boiler. A boiler heats water that pumps around your radiators to warm your home. A heat pump does this just in another way and sits outside instead of the kitchen cupboard.

How does it work?

Ever put your finger over the end of a bike pump and pump it to feel the warm air on your fingers. Its the same principal. Air is compressed to create heat which is then transferred to the water in your heating system.

Do they take ages to heat the house?

No, but it does take longer than traditional heating. This is because the temperature of the water in the radiators is lower. Like a joint of meat in the smoker, its low and slow. Check out our article on low temp heating for a more in depth understanding.

I've heard they are always on is this true?

They are not always heating but you use them in a different way than what you are used to. Rather than turning your stat up when you're cold and down when you're hot you're heat pump is designed to keep your house to a constant set comfortable temperature.

Are they expensive to run as electric is more expensive than gas?

This question needs a full blog of its own to explain. Installed correctly then no. Installed incorrectly then you will be in for a big bill which is why its more important than ever to use a reputable installer. This is where we come in.
